Yes, it's worth it. Even with the crowds, we had plenty of time to ourselves where it was quiet and unpopulated. I did it in 2010 and I'll agree that I thought it was worth it. You can find tour companies that will take you on the trail pretty cheaply, although alternative trails will be even cheaper.
