The site was originally on an island in the Quoile Marshes. The pre-Norman Celtic monastic settlement there, known as Inis Cumhscraigh, was in existence by the year 800 A.D.. In 1002 and again in 1149, it was plundered by the Vikings.

The most notable is Cathedral Hill which we shall visit shortly but there is another important religious site on a drumlin almost visible from here. Behind the industrial estate and across the river are the ruins of Inch Abbey (sometimes obscured by trees).
