Had a similar issue with my 2000 TJ 4.0 last year, losing about half a gallon per 100 miles. Took it to the shop, and they ran every test in the book (pressure test hot and cold, visual drips, exhaust color, radiator hydrocarbon sniff, compression, and so on).
